TEXAS PARENT TO PARENT (TXP2P) Mentoring Project
Providing support and information for families of children with disabilities, chronic illness and other special needs.

Project Description:  Mission Trail Rotary with a matching grant from District 5840 Donor Advised Funds (The Rotary Foundation) is supporting the expansion of new and unique services for families of children with disabilites in the San Antonio community.  The partnering nonprofit is Texas Parent to Parent which will offer two workshops in San Antonio to train Parent Volunteers as mentors for families that have children with disabilities.  The training of Parent Volunteers will provide San Antonio with new resources for information and a new community support system for families.  Additionally, Mission Trail Rotary will assist in making existing local organization aware of the new services and information available through TXP2P.
Long Term Goal:  Development a self sustaining support and parent mentor group available to San Antonio communities.

Project Update: Two workshops training "parent mentors" were held in Rotary Year 2005 (October 05 & April 06).  Training was conducted by the staff of TxP2P for volunteers from the San Antonio community.  Mission Trail provided logistic and child care support.  "Any Baby Can" of San Antonio provided the venue and childcare facilities.  Because of these training sessions supported by MTR and the District 5840 Donor Advised Funds, San Antonio is now a participating member of Texas Parent to Parent.  San Antonio parent mentors are currently on call to help Texas' families of children with disabilities. These sessions also introduced TxP2P to school systems and health care workers in San Antonio and have resulted in a San Antonio "List Serve" of local agencies providing services to children with disabilities and their families.  The San Antonio sessions resulted in a revised, streamlined training schedule for parents.  Parents can now complete training in a single-day course.

Rotary Year 2006 (July 06-June 07): Mission Trail will provide financial and logistic support to a newly scheduled "Parent Mentor Training Session."  Sessions to be held on Saturday, March 3, 2007.  Parents of children with disabilities or chronic disease should contact Texas Parent to Parent if they wish information or wish to volunteer as family mentors.
